CAIRO, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- Secretary-general of the Cairo-based Arab League (AL) urged Lebanon on Wednesday to stay away from the polarization and hegemony attempts of other parties in the liberal Arab country.

"The AL rejects any attempts to create disorder and spread tension and sedition in Lebanon," AL chief Ahmed Aboul-Gheit said in a statement, calling on all Lebanese parties to prioritize the nation's greater interest over any other considerations.

Outgoing Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri announced resignation on Nov. 4 in the Saudi capital Riyadh, attributing the reason to the internal and external armed activities of Hezbollah, a Lebanese Iran-backed Shiite militant group represented by several ministers and affiliates in the government.

Hariri claimed that Hezbollah is Iran's tool to ruin the Arab world and destabilize the region. "Lebanon would not play a role in destabilizing the region," Hariri said in his televised speech televised.

Observers warn that Lebanon could be a threat to the conflict between the two regional rivals, Sunni Saudi Arabia and Shiite Iran, through Lebanon's Hezbollah.

The AL chief has been communicating with all Lebanese parties over the past couple of days to directly listen to their visions on the current situation in Lebanon and the possible repercussions of Hariri's resignation.

"We hope that Lebanon will overcome its current crisis without affecting its civil peace and stability," said Aboul-Gheit.
