MANAGUA, Nicaragua, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Nicaragua's ruling Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) has won 135 of 153 mayoral seats in the municipal elections, according to a preliminary report released Monday by the Supreme Electoral Council.

With 98.76 percent of the ballots counted, the FSLN led over opposition parties by a wide margin, garnering more than 1.321 million votes, or 68.23 percent of the total.

The Constitutionalist Liberal Party came in second with 315,132 votes, winning 11 mayoralties, followed by Citizens for Liberty, which won six, and the Nationalist Liberal Alliance, which won one.

An international observer mission composed of electoral experts from Honduras, El Salvador, Bolivia, Chile and the Dominican Republic said Sunday's elections went smoothly.

Voting took place in an atmosphere of order and tranquility, with the massive participation of women and youth, state news website El 19 Digital quoted the mission as saying.

The elections saw the participation of a little over 51 percent of registered voters.
