TRIPOLI, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- A senior leader of a Libyan armed extremist coalition on Monday died of illness in prison in Libya's western city of Misurata, local sources said.

"Libyan terrorist Ahmad Bakir, known as 'The Bee,' died on Monday in prison after suffering a severe epileptic seizure," sources in Misurata told Xinhua.

Bakir is a senior leader of the Benghazi Defense Brigades, a coalition of extremist groups fighting against the eastern-based army in Benghazi.

The group announced in June that it is ready to disband to save the country from "an international war."

Bakir was arrested in Aug. 31 by Misurata's Anti-Terrorism Force after the group was expelled from southern Libya by the army, led by General Khalifa Haftar.

Benghazi Defense Brigades is listed as a terrorist group by Libya's eastern based authorities, as well as Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt.
