KAMPALA, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Rwandan government on Monday mourned six of its students studying in Uganda who were killed in a Saturday road accident in the central district of Nakasongola.

Frank Mugambage, the Rwanda High Commissioner to Uganda, described the death of students who were studying at Kampala International University as unfortunate and tragic.

The fatal accident occurred after the driver of the commuter taxi the students were traveling in avoided a head on collision with another commuter taxi, ramming into a broken parked truck at Kakooge along the Gulu-Kampala highway.

The commuter taxi was carrying 13 students who belong to the Banyarwanda Students Association at Kampala International University.

They were returning from attending a friend's wedding party in the western town of Masindi.

"We are saddened and mourn the loss of these young lives who perished in a tragic road accident. Arrangements are being made for their burials," Mugambage told Xinhua.

Five students died on spot, while the sixth passed away on the way to the hospital and five others were critically injured.

Uganda registers at least 20,000 accidents with over 2,000 deaths each year, making it one of the countries with the highest road accident fatality rates in the world, according to police figures.
