Army kills 9 militants in N. Afghan province

KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- At least nine militants were killed and 13 others wounded following an Afghan army's operation in northern province Kunduz, an army source said Saturday.

The operation was launched in the restive Khan Abad district Friday night, where a joint Afghan and NATO forces' unit attacked Taliban bases, leaving nine fighters, including two of their commanders dead and 13 others wounded, Abdul Khalil, a press officer of the army's Division 20 Pamir based in the region, told Xinhua.

Unofficial sources said several civilians were also wounded during the fighting in Khan Abad overnight.

But, Mohammad Nayeem Mangal, a doctor in the provincial hospital, said five wounded civilians including one child were transported and admitted to the provincial hospital Saturday morning.

The Taliban has not commented on the report.
