ATHENS, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- Greece on Wednesday expressed solidarity with the United States over the terror attack in New York city on Tuesday, which left eight people dead and a dozen injured.

Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos expressed condolences to U.S. President Donald Trump and to the families of the victims in a message conveyed through the U.S. embassy to Greece, according to an e-mailed press announcement.

"Our thoughts go out to New York terrorist attack victims and their families. We stand by the people of U.S. and its government," the Greek Foreign ministry tweeted.

A truck plowed into pedestrians near the World Trade Center in New York City. The attack occurred hours before an annual Halloween parade was to take place in lower Manhattan, which would be packed with thousands of people in costumes and masks.
