MEXICO CITY, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- Mexico's state-owned oil company Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) aims to cut its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 25 percent by 2021, the company said on Sunday.

"Environmental protection and sustainable development are priorities for Pemex," the company's CEO, Jose Antonio Gonzalez Anaya, told a gathering in London, according to a Pemex release.

The meeting took place as part of the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI), a CEO-led initiative of 10 oil and gas companies that collaborate on action to lead the industry response to climate change.

Pemex' 2017-2021 Business Plan includes curbs on greenhouse gases, increasing water recycling by 60 percent in the coming four years to save water at its refineries, and promoting an ecological corridor in the oil rich Gulf state of Veracruz, the company said.

The heads of the world's 10 biggest oil companies attended the meeting, and Pemex "was the only Latin American company invited to the important event, which consolidates its leadership in the global oil sector in the fight against climate change and environmental protection," added the company.

The OGCI, which has created a billion U.S. dollar fund to invest in clean technologies, also issued its annual report at the meeting, reiterating that natural gas is key to the industrial transition away from CO2.
