Windstorm hits Czech Republic

PRAGUE, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- A strong windstorm hit Czech Republic on Sunday, with national power company CEZ Distribuce declaring the state of calamity in seven regions over an accumulation of breakdowns in voltage caused.

Two people, a woman and a man, were reportedly killed by the falling trees.

The state of calamity was valid in the Karlovy Vary, Hradec Kralove, Liberec, Pardubice, Plzen, Central Bohemia and Usti regions, CEZ spokeswoman Sona Holingerova said.

The worst situation is in the Hradec Kralove, Usti and Central Bohemia regions, she said.

Hundreds of thousands of households were without electricity. The falls of trees and branches were the most frequent causes of the outages.

Czech Railways said on its website that the railway traffic of dozens of lines were interrupted or complicated due to the windstorm. Passengers must wait for a long delay.

The operation of nine railway lines was stopped due to the windstorm in the north of Bohemia, including one international line from Decin to Germany. The railway traffic between Prague and Ceske Budejovice is completely interrupted.

The strong wind has been devastating in most of the Czech Republic since early Sunday morning, causing the biggest damage in its western and northern parts.

According to the forecast of Czech Hydrometeorological Institute, the windstorm will last throughout the country till 7:00 p.m. local time.
