NICOSIA, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- Unified time returned to Cyprus on Sunday after the breakaway Turkish Cypriots reverted to winter time, breaking their practice to keep summer time in line with Turkey.

Cyprus follows the practice of the European Union to set time one hour ahead on the last Sunday of March each year and change to winter time on the last Sunday of October by setting clocks one hour back.

The Turkish Cypriot authorities in the part of Cyprus occupied by Turkish troops had originally decided to keep summer time all the year round in line with Turkey.

But they changed their mind abruptly without giving any reason.

Turkish Cypriot had protested strongly in 2016 when the so-called government in the Turkish occupied Cyprus ordered them to keep summer time during winter along with Turkey.

At the time they attributed several road accidents involving school busses to poor lighting as students had to travel to school during dawn darkness

They had also complained that it complicated everyday life and their relations with Greek Cypriots.
