GAZA, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said Sunday that it has found and sealed a cavity underneath one of its schools in Gaza.

"On Oct. 15 2017, the UNRWA discovered what appeared to be a tunnel underneath one of its schools in Gaza," said UNRWA spokesperson Christopher Gunness in a special statement.

The statements denounced the violation of neutrality of the UNRWA establishments in Gaza that puts beneficiaries and staff at risk.

After sealing the discovered cavity, the school resumed its work again on Oct. 25.

Islamic Hamas movement spokesperson Abdul Latif Al-Qanou' refused to comment on the issue and told Xinhua that relevant parties are investigating it.

UNRWA announced on July 9th, that it had discovered a tunnel passing underneath two of its schools in Gaza Strip.

Back then, Hamas movement, which has been controlling the coastal enclave since 2007, denied any relation with such tunnels and that "it has clarified the issue with all resistance factions, who said clearly they do not have any resistance-related work at the declared location and that they respect UNRWA and vital establishments."

UNRWA has been functioning recently with a significant financial shortfall, due to the growth in the number of refugees in Palestine and their deepening poverty that is not allowing it to meet the growing demands.

The descendants of Palestinians refugees now are estimated to be well over five million Palestinians still living as refugees in different places around the world and in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, most of who were registered by the UNRWA, that was established since 1949.

In Gaza, over 1.2 million refugees are registered, while in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the number of refugees is estimated at around 750,000.
