TAIPEI, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan keeps moving towards an aging society, according to data released Saturday by the island's interior affairs authority.

The aging index, which measures the ratio of people aged 65 and above to those under 15, rose to reach 103.66 by the end of September.

An index over 100 means there are more elderly than young people. The aging index in February breached the 100-mark for the first time.

Taiwan is now home to about 3.22 million people aged 65 and over, about 13.7 percent of the island's population.

The three counties in which old people account for the highest percentage of the population are Chiayi, Yunlin and Nantou.

Taiwan's elderly population aged 65 and above grew by more than 50 percent in the past 15 years, and their share among the total population gained 4.39 percentage points.
