GENEVA, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- The retrial of the former head of Guatemala's police force, Erwin Sperisen, on multiple murder charges was delayed for several months as his legal team moved to eject a judge form the hearing, Swiss media reported Thursday.

The new trial had been scheduled for Nov. 28, but it has now been postponed to April to allow time to settle a legal wrangle, Le Temps newspaper reported.

Lawyers for Sperisen argue that the president of the Genevan appeal court Alessandra Cambi Favre-Bulle is biased against their client.

Sperisen, a dual Swiss-Guatemalan citizen, had been sentenced by a Swiss court to life imprisonment in 2014 after being found guilty of ordering the deaths of 10 prison inmates between 2005-2006 in the central American country.

But earlier this year Swiss judges ordered a retrial because his defense was compromised by irregularities in the original hearing.

Sperisen is currently under house arrest in Switzerland.

His lawyers have announced that they intend to sue the Genevan authorities for 1 million Swiss francs in damages.

They called his original trial "one of the biggest miscarriages of justice in the annals of Switzerland," Swissinfo, the website of the Swiss national broadcaster reported.

Sperisen inherited his Swiss citizenship from his father, and moved to Switzerland after resigning from the Guatemala police force in 2007.
