Indonesia to carry on with foreign policies applied in last 3 years: minister

JAKARTA, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said that Indonesia planned to carry on with its foreign policies applied in the last three years under President Joko Widodo's leadership, to take more active international roles in addressing its foreign affairs.

Speaking at an event to brief on Indonesia's results in its foreign policy sector during the period, the minister summarized that the most prominent ones were Indonesia's active role in helping solve the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar's Rakhine State, Indonesia's support for Palestine and its policies of protecting Indonesian nationals staying abroad.

Besides sending humanitarian aids for those victimized by the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, Indonesia has also suggested application of 4+1 solution to end the crisis.

On the issue of Palestine, she said that Indonesia is still adhering to its relentless support for the independence of Palestine, emphasizing that it has become an essential part of Indonesia's foreign policies.

She added that Indonesia has opened a honorary consulate office in Ramallah last year, aimed at intensifying relations between Indonesia and Palestine.

Indonesia has previously hosted a high profile meeting of Islamic Conference Organization (OIC) which particularly discussed Palestine and Jerusalem status last year.

She added that Indonesian government also provides capacity building program for Palestinian people so as to make them better-prepared should Palestine eventually gain its independence.

On citizen protection, the minister said that Indonesian government has saved 144 nationals from death executions in the last three years in several foreign countries. It also managed to evacuate more than 16,000 nationals to safety in areas whelmed with conflicts.

The minister said that the government has also saved 31 nationals from the custody of their armed group kidnappers in the Philippines and Somalia during the period.

In term of economic diplomacy, Marsudi revealed that Indonesia has improved its investment grade and opened non-traditional markets in Africa, South and Central Asia, as well as South America.

On foreign economy policy sector, the minister said that Indonesia intends to explore more trade agreements with other economies aimed at reducing trade barrier risk which is now widely applied by part of them.
