Hong Kong Customs seizes suspected smuggled smartphones

HONG KONG, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong Customs announced on Thursday that it had seized 887 suspected smuggled smartphones with an estimated market value of about 1 million HK dollars (128,205 U.S. dollars).

Customs officers intercepted an outgoing private car at Lok Ma Chau Control Point on Wednesday evening and seized 463 smartphones.

Later, Customs officers seized 424 smartphones and packing materials at a vehicle yard in Sheung Shui and an industrial building unit in Kwun Tong.

Four men and one woman aged 17 to 36 were arrested.

According to Hong Kong Customs, under the Import and Export Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing or exporting unmanifested cargo is liable to a maximum fine of 2 million HK dollars and imprisonment of seven years.
