SEOUL, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's memory chip giant SK Hynix posted its record quarterly high of operating profit in the third quarter thanks to strong global demand for semiconductors, a regulatory filing showed Thursday.

Operating profit reached 3.74 trillion won (3.32 billion U.S. dollars) in the July-September quarter, topping the prior high of 3.05 trillion won tallied in the previous.

The figure more than quintupled 726 billion won recorded a year earlier. For the first nine months of this year, the chipmaker's profit amounted to 9.26 trillion won.

Revenue surged 91 percent over the year to hit a fresh high of 8.1 trillion won in the September quarter. The ratio of operating profit to revenue was 46 percent.

Net income also reached a new high of 3.06 trillion won in the quarter, more than quadrupling from a year earlier.

The upbeat earnings were attributable to a boom in the global memory chip market. Demand for DRAM chips was strong amid the seasonally robust demand for chips during the quarter.

NAND flash memory chip prices posted a lower average selling price, but the shipments volume increased on the launch of new smartphone models. (1 South Korean won = 0.00089 U.S. dollar)
