HANOI, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam, known as a motorcycle kingdom in the world, gained total motorbike sales of 2.4 million units in the first nine months of this year, up some 6 percent against the same period last year, according to the Vietnam Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (VAMM) on Sunday.
Most of the motorbikes were sold by five members of the VAMM with the biggest sales made by Honda, followed by Yamaha, SYM, Piaggio and Suzuki, according to the association.
Now, urban dwellers in Vietnam prefer scooters, while their rural peers still have high demand for motorcycles, VAMM said, noting that its members currently have 53 product models, while non-member firms focus on high engine capacity motorbikes.
Although Hanoi has decided to ban motorbikes from running in its urban districts from 2030, the local motorbike market will remain stable in the near future, the association forecast.
VAMM members sold 3.1 million motorcycles last year. By the end of February 2017, Vietnam had 45 million motorbikes, according to statistics from motorbike producers and traders in the country.
