NDALATANDO, Angola, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- More than 2.9 million square meters of land were cleared from landmines in Angola' s northern Cuanza Norte province, from 2005 to 2017, head of mine clearance operations at the National Demining Institute (INAD), Chitavi Linen said here Saturday.

In the same period, nine anti-tank mines, ninety-nine anti-personnel and over 29 thousand different unexploded ordnance were also removed in the province.

The official added that the province of Cuanza Norte has currently mapped 125 suspected mined areas.

In 2016, he recalled, a mine accident in the municipality of Samba Caju, in the province, killed 4 children and left 2 injured.

The nearly three decades of civil war turned Angola in one of the mostly mined countries in the world.

The armed conflict ended in 2002 and since then the country has embarked on the mine clearance activity.
