VIENNA, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Austrian chancellor Christian Kern has commissioned legal experts to investigate a potential lawsuit against the expansion of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant in Hungary, local media reported on Friday.

The move was prompted by a decision from the European Commission to approve of state financing for the nuclear plant.

"I strongly reject the expansion of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant," Kern said, "Not just on safety grounds, but also for energy policy and economic reasons this expansion makes no sense."

While the decision by the commission has been made public on its website, it has not yet been entered into the Official Journal of the European Union.

After the latter takes place, Austria has two months as per European Union law to pursue a complaint at the European Court of Justice.
