TEHRAN, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- If U.S. President Donald Trump announces unilateral withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal, it will be another step by the U.S. on the path toward international isolation, an Iranian political analyst said Friday.
The landmark deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was clinched in 2015 between Iran and the P5+1 -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States plus Germany, and endorsed by the UN Security Council in a unanimously adopted resolution.
However, Trump has long criticized the Iran nuclear pact, vowing to get rid of it. He is expected to make an announcement to decertify the treaty, a de facto move to quit it.
"The evidence shows that Trump is on the path of isolation with his international policies, particularly with his standing against Iran's nuclear program," Seyed Jalal Deqani Firoozabadi, a professor of International Relations at Iran's Allameh Tabatabaee University was quoted by Iran Daily as saying.
In his speech delivered at UN General Assembly last month, Trump called the agreement "an embarrassment" for the U.S., while indicating he might not recertify the deal at its Friday deadline.
The Trump administration is required to inform the congress by Oct. 15 about whether Iran is complying with the deal. If he decides Iran is not, it could open the way for U.S. lawmakers to reimpose sanctions against Iran, which will in fact scrap the deal.
"The world seems to have shaped an unprecedented consensus against Trump's strategy toward Iran's nuclear deal," Firoozabadi said.
Indeed, the EU partners of U.S., as well as China and Russia have stressed their adherence to the deal. Therefore, Trump's unilateral move would bring about international isolation of the United States, Firoozabadi said.
"In the meantime, JCPOA is a multilateral diplomatic success for the world ..., and is an example of mechanism to maintain the vitality of Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT)," he said.
If the deal falls apart, the NPT will be devalued, and the U.S. would be blamed for that, Firoozabadi noted.
When it comes to building a world free of nuclear threats, the only viable solution should be a diplomatic and multilateral one, Firoozabadi said.
If the U.S. quits the nuclear deal, it will only increase the cost for the U.S., he added.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Wednesday warned that the U.S. would be the loser, if Trump decides to dump the nuclear deal.
If the Americans repeat their earlier mistakes, they will "face global predicament," Rouhani said.
