HAVANA, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Cuba suffered around 87 million U.S. dollars in damages last year due to the blockade maintained over five decades by Washington, official media reported on Thursday.
Jorge Gonzalez, President of the Health and Sports Commission of the Cuban parliament, said this policy against Havana has restricted the Caribbean nation from offering full services to patients, due to severe limitations in importing medical equipment and drugs from abroad.
Gonzalez stated the economic sanctions on the island are a "remnant" of the Cold War and Washington should abide by the massive support expressed by the international community to end the embargo at the UN General Assembly every year.
Over the past 25 years, Cuba has presented a yearly resolution at UN against the U.S. economic blockade, which has been supported by most member countries.
In 2016, Cuba's report obtained 191 votes in favor while the U.S. and Israel abstained, marking the first time in over two decades Washington did not vote against this resolution.
This year's vote will be held on Nov. 1 and the U.S. is expected to vote against it once again as U.S. President Donald Trump has reversed the rapprochement promoted by former President Barack Obama.
