GENEVA, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- In 2016, the overall Swiss population is tolerant while most are in favor of granting more rights to foreign nationals, a latest survey conducted by the Swiss Federal Statistical Office said Tuesday.

According to the survey, 66 percent of the Swiss people recognize that racism is a key social problem and 56 percent believe that the integration of migrants in Swiss society is working well.

However, according to the survey, some 36 percent of the Swiss population said they might feel uncomfortable in the presence of people perceived to be different, due to, for example, their nationality, religion or skin color.

Conducting the survey on diversity and coexistence in Switzerland for the first time, the Swiss Federal Statistical Office said the aim of the new survey is to help people to "feel the pulse of multicultural coexistence in Switzerland."

Swiss official figure shows that the presence of many social groups and a variety of affiliations is a feature of life in Switzerland, with currently more than ten main religious communities in a population of over 190 nationalities in the country.
