S.Korean automakers keep double-digit increase in domestic car sales

SEOUL, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- South Korean automakers kept a double-digit increase in domestic car sales for the two straight months through September, industry data showed Tuesday.

Global car sales by the country's five carmakers, including Hyundai, Kia, GM Korea, Renault Samsung and Ssangyong, reached 732,863 units in September, up 5.67 percent from a year earlier.

In the domestic market, auto sales jumped 20.14 percent over the year to 133,551 vehicles in September, with the figure for exports rising 2.91 percent to 599,312 units.

Hyundai Motor, the country's biggest automaker, saw its local car sales jumped 43.7 percent in September from a year earlier, with domestic sales by its affiliate Kia Motors advancing 25.4 percent.

Global auto sales by Hyundai gained 3.5 percent to 400,995 units in the cited period on robust sales in the domestic market, while the number for Kia increased 7.1 percent to 252,254 units.

Ssangyong ranked third in local car sales for the first time since the company's establishment due to solid demand for new models.

Ssangyong's global car sales gained 8.4 percent over the year to 13,168 units in September, including local sales of 9,465 vehicles and exports of 3,703 units.

GM Korea and Renault Samsung saw a double-digit decline in local car sales, but posted a growth in exports.

GM Korea's global auto sales stood at 40,264 units last month, with Renault Samsung recording 26,182 vehicles in global sales.
