Weaker South Africa rand pushes JSE to new record

JOHANNEBURG, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- The Johannesburg stock exchange (JSE) continued its gain on Monday as it stretched its rally for the seventh consecutive trading day.

The South Africa rand slipped through R13.80 against the U.S. dollar for the first time since April, boosting big rand hedge, resources and industrial stocks. These pushed the all share index up 0.52 percent to 57,530.11 points by close of trading session, as the blue-chip top 40 gained 0.61 percent to 51,323.23 points.

BHP gained 1.78 percent to R251; Glencore lost 0.12 percent to R66.06, and Anglo dropped 1.49 percent to R260.18. The gold index gained 1.23 percent after the gold price rose 0.44 percent to 1281.18 dollars per ounce.

Share prices on the JSE started to move sideways after an initial sharp gain. Naspers was 0.81 percent higher on a new intra-day high of R3190.44, and MTN was 1.03 percent higher at R122.43.

Sasol was one of the top gainers among blue-chip stocks, advancing 2.92 percent to settle at R396.26.

Healthcare stocks were also in demand, with Netcare gaining 3.29 percent to R24.82 and Life Healthcare 3.38 percent to R26.31.

Investment group Brait was up 3.66 percent to R54.94. AngloGold Ashanti added 2.17 percent to R133.35 and Sibanye-Stillwater 2.67 percent to R16.17. Enditem
