LUSAKA, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations (UN) refugee agency Zambia office said on Monday that it requires about 3.5 million U.S. dollars to manage the influx of refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in northern parts of Zambia.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said the cost of managing the influx of DRC asylum seekers was likely to increase because of the continuous arrival of people.
Kelvin Shimoh, the communications manager said the funds that have been made available were not adequate to manage the crisis, according to state broadcaster, the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation.
The country, he said, has so far received more than 6,000 asylum seekers from the DRC since January, with August recording the highest number of arrivals.
The asylum seekers were being kept at a housing center in Nchelenge district where they are being provided with basic necessities.
