HARARE, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Zimbabwean First Lady Grace Mugabe Friday described the claims that Vice President (VP) Emmerson Mnangagwa was poisoned as baseless and accused the VP of trying to garner sympathy.

Mnangagwa fell sick and had a severe bout of vomiting and diarrhea while attending a rally being addressed by President Robert Mugabe in the southern town of Gwanda in August.

He was immediately airlifted to the town of Gweru for treatment and then to Harare before subsequently being flown to South Africa the next day for treatment.

Mnangagwa's illness promoted speculation that he had been poisoned after eating ice cream from a dairy farm owned by the First Family.

Though Mnangagwa has refuted the ice cream allegations by saying he did not eat ice cream from the dairy, he reportedly made the remarks that he was poisoned.
