KIEV, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- A powerful windstorm swept across western Ukraine in the past 24 hours, causing power outages and traffic disruptions, the State Service for Emergencies said on Friday.

Winds reaching 108 km per hour and heavy rains have brought down dozens of trees and cut electrical power lines in seven regions, leading to a total darkness in 334 cities and villages, the agency said in a statement.

Besides, the fallen trees have disrupted the traffic on several local automobile roads and two international highways linking cities in western Ukraine and eastern Poland.

About 135 disaster-relief personnel and 43 units of equipment have been deployed to restore power supplies and unblock the automobile traffic.

The State Service for Emergencies has warned the windstorm may spread to other Ukrainian regions on Saturday.
