CHICAGO, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Japanese automotive supplier Denso on Friday announced plans to invest 1 billion U.S. dollars in its Tennessee facility to "increase the role North America plays in the global trend toward vehicle safety and electrification."

The project will create more than 1,000 jobs in Maryville, the southern U.S. state of Tennessee, to make it a primary manufacturing center in North America for electrification and safety systems, according to a statement of Denso International America.

"This is an investment in the future of Denso, and also the future of transportation, " said Kenichiro Ito, chairman and chief executive officer of Denso International America.

"We are seeing dramatic shifts in the role of transportation in society, and this investment will help position us to meet those changing demands," he added.

In 2015, Denso announced a 400 million dollars investment in Maryville, adding 500 jobs and consolidating various warehouse operations into one central location.

There are currently more than 3,500 people at its Maryville facilities. Denso's key customers in North America include Toyota, Honda, GM, Chrysler and Ford.
