CANBERRA, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- South Australian Senator Nick Xenophon has announced that he is resigning from the Australian parliament.

Xenophon, who's Nick Xenophon Team (NXT) holds three key seats in the Senate, announced his resignation on Friday, saying he intended to run for the South Australian state parliament in the 2018 election.

He will contest the seat of Hartley in South Australia's House of Assembly, the lower house of the state's parliament, which is currently held by the opposition Liberal Party of South Australia (SA), for the SA-BEST party which he established in July 2017.

"Next year's State Election will be critically important, and the election campaign needs to be like no other, because South Australia is at a cross roads," Xenophon said at a press conference on Friday.
