DHAKA, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh's foreign exchange reserves reached nearly 33 billion U.S. dollars at the end of September, said a central bank official on Thursday.

The Bangladesh Bank (BB) Forex Reserve and Treasury Management Department official who did not like to be named told Xinhua that "the country's foreign exchange reserves stood at 32,820.13 million U.S. dollars in September after reaching 33,596.25 million U.S. dollars on Aug. 31."

Bangladesh's foreign exchange reserves crossed the 33-billion-U.S.-dollar mark in June amid a boom in inflow of remittances ahead of one of the biggest Muslim religious festivals Eid-al-Fitr that marks the end of the Islamic holy fasting month of Ramadan.

Earlier in December last year the country's foreign reserves reached 32 billion U.S. dollars.

Officials said Bangladesh is in a position to pay over 10 months' import bills with the existing reserves, which are also enough to help the central bank's efforts in keeping the foreign exchange market stable.
