SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee called for "commonsense gun laws" in the wake of Las Vegas mass shooting Sunday night that killed 58 people and injured more than 500 others.

In a statement released Monday morning, when news broke out that at least 10 weapons were found with the deceased lone gunman, Lee noted that "the unprecedented tragedy that took place in Las Vegas is shocking and heartbreaking."

"During times like these, we solemnly remember the victims, but we must also ask ourselves why these horrific events continue to transpire. Our nation needs stricter, commonsense gun laws," he said, adding that "we cannot continue to play politics with American lives."

The mayor of the city in Northern California, which neighbors Nevada on the east, where Las Vegas is located, went on to say that as San Francisco prepares for civic events this week, the city will increase law enforcement resources and work with state and Federal partners to ensure a safe and secure environment for residents, visitors and employees.

While acknowledging that there are no known threats to San Francisco at this time, Lee's statement reminded everyone in the city on the U.S. West Coast that "if they 'See Something, Say Something.'"

Governor Jerry Brown of California issued a similar statement Monday regarding the shooting incident, pledging that "our prayers and deepest sympathies are with the families and loved ones of those killed and injured in last night's tragic and senseless shooting and we stand with the people of Nevada in this difficult time."

Greg Abbott, governor of Texas, also said Monday that the news of violence in Las Vegas overnight is heartbreaking.

In a statement issued on the shooting in Las Vegas, Abbott said, "Texas mourns and prays for the victims of this tragedy, and the entire Las Vegas Community, in this time of unimaginable pain."
