UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was shocked by Sunday night's shooting in Las Vegas that killed at least 58 people and wounded more than 500 others.

"He was very shocked and alarmed by the horrific attack that took place in Las Vegas," Guterres' deputy spokesman, Farhan Haq, told reporters on Monday.

Guterres will be writing a letter of condolences to the U.S. government to express the world body's sorrow at the loss of so many lives, he said.

In the worst ever shooting incident in the United States, a gunman opened fire on music concertgoers from the 32nd floor of a hotel, killing at least 58 people and wounding 515 others.
