ADDIS ABABA, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopia is bidding to host the 2018 African Championship of Nations (CHAN) tournament, 42 years after hosting its last major continental football tournament.

The announcement was made through a statement posted by Confederation of African Football (CAF) on its website on Monday.

The last time Ethiopia hosted a major continental football tournament was in 1976 when it hosted the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) which was won by the Kingdom of Morocco.

CHAN is a tournament dedicated to football players which trade their football careers exclusively in domestic leagues while AFCON is open to players who trade their football careers both in domestic leagues and foreign leagues.

Ethiopia's neighbor Kenya was initially chosen to host the 2018 edition of CHAN, but CAF rescinded the decision citing Kenya's inadequate football facilities and poor preparation to host the tournament.

Two other African nations Morocco and Equatorial Guinea have also submitted bids to host the 2018 CHAN tournament.

The 2018 edition of CHAN is scheduled to be held from January 12 to February 4 2018, with 16 African nations expected to participate. Enditem
