CAIRO, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi on Saturday pledged to continue the efforts to protect Egyptians' human rights and basic freedoms while fighting terrorism.
Sisi made the remarks during his meeting with Mohamed Fayek, head of the National Council for Human Rights (NCHR), the official Middle East News Agency (MENA) quoted a statement by Presidential Spokesman Alaa Youssef as saying.
Fayek submitted to Sisi the NCHR annual report in the year 2016-2017, which details major challenges related to the human rights situation in Egypt as well as the means to address them.
Sisi underlined the important role the NCHR plays, especially during the current period in which Egypt is keen on enhancing the comprehensive concept of human rights.
Egypt's government seeks to strike a balance between maintaining people's rights and freedoms on one side and achieving security and stability on the other, Youssef said.
Sisi promised to study the NCHR report and consider its recommendations, the spokesman added.
Fayek acknowledged that Egypt's efforts aiming at fighting terrorism and protecting its national security have positively contributed to enhancing security and stability.
The report also raised issues to be considered to improve Egypt's human rights situation, including enhancing the living condition of prisoners and paying attention to the role of the civil society, Youssef added.
