VILNIUS, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- An explosive from World War II has been found and neutralized on Friday in Vilnius, downhill of historic Gediminas mound situated at the very heart of Lithuania's capital.
Around a midday local time at Vilnius, the Vilnius County Chief Police Commissariat announced that a mine has been discovered during reconstructive works of the Gediminas mound.
According to the spokespeople at Juozas Vitkus Engineer Battalion from the Lithuanian armed forces, a German-origin mine, non-exploded and posing a danger to others, was discovered at the historic Vilnius site, local media reported. It was transferred for neutralizing to Vilnius surroundings, the military representatives said.
A brigade from Lithuania's Fire and Rescue Department has been sent to the site.
Gediminas Hill has been suffering from land slopes and disintegration earlier this summer, due to heavy rains.
Gediminas Hill and Gediminas' Tower, the remaining part of the Upper Castle in Vilnius, are one of the most important symbols not only of the capital city, but also of Lithuania's state.
