Myanmar sends over 2.6 million migrant workers abroad in past 27 years: official

NAY PYI TAW, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Myanmar authorities sent over 2.6 million migrant workers to work abroad during the past 27 years, U Thein Swe, minister for Labour, Immigration and Population said on Thursday.

Most number of the migrant workers were sent to Thailand with over 2.3 million, followed by Malaysia with about 422,253, South Korea 32,834 and Singapore 13,900, Thein Swe told a national tripartite preparatory meeting involving the ministry and the International Labor Organization

The other migrant workers were sent to Japan, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar and China's Hong Kong, he said.

The preparatory meeting was held prior to the 10th ASEAN forum on migrant workers to be hosted by the Philippines at the end of October under the theme of "Towards Achieving Decent Work for Domestic Workers in ASEAN".
