CAIRO, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- EgyptAir has decided to suspend its flights to Erbil of Iraqi Kurdistan region as of Friday until further notice, the air company announced in a statement on Wednesday.
The company said the decision was made upon the request of the Iraqi civil aviation authority.
"EgyptAir suspends its flights to Erbil airport as of Friday, Sept. 29, from 1500 GMT. The decision is in effect until further notice," said EgyptAir statement.
On Wednesday, official results of the Iraqi Kurdistan region's recent independence referendum showed that 92.73 percent of voters backed independence and statehood.
Iraq's central government in Baghdad rejected the referendum as illegal.
Egypt and several Arab states have repeatedly voiced deep concerns over the possible repercussions of the Iraqi Kurd self-determination referendum, warning it could affect the unity and stability of Iraq.
Likewise, the Cairo-based Arab League has previously expressed rejection of the referendum and its chief Ahmed Aboul-Gheit has recently visited both Baghdad and Erbil to urge for dialogue instead.
