TEHRAN, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Iranians held a funeral ceremony in the capital Tehran on Wednesday in the honor of Mohsen Hojaji who was beheaded by the Islamic State (IS) militants in Syria last month.

Hojaji, a member of the Iranian advisory support team in Syria, had been taken hostage by the IS militants near the Iraqi border in Syria. On Aug. 9, it was announced that he was beheaded by the IS.

According to Tehran Times daily, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei attended Imam Hussein Mosque in Tehran on Wednesday to perform prayers for the dead body of Hojaji before the funeral ceremony.

Top Iranian military and governmental officials attended the ceremony.
