CHICAGO, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- A La Nina watch has been issued for the U.S. Midwest which might see a colder and snowier winter.

American farmers in agricultural states such as Iowa and Nebraska are taking note as the U.S. National Weather Service has issued a La Nina watch for the fall and winter months, the Iowa Radio reported on Tuesday.

Under the influence of La Nina, the counterpart of El Nino, the sea surface temperature across the equatorial eastern central Pacific Ocean will be lower than normal, which will have impact on the weather even across North America.

"A number of the models vary from just marginal La Nina conditions to moderately strong ones," Meteorologist Dennis Todey was quoted as saying.

Todey, director of the Midwest Climate Hub affiliated with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, added that they "are balancing the trend toward warmer winters with the La Nina conditions which have a little better probability of being cooler."

A La Nina system could also lead to more snow over the Midwest and Northern Plains this winter, said the Meteorologist.
