NEW DELHI, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday launched a free power scheme for the poor families in both urban and rural areas as he vowed to end corruption.

Modi said the scheme, named Saubhagya (good fortune), will ensure power connections for all unelectrified homes in rural and urban areas.

"No poor person will have to pay for electricity access. New India will not only have power in all villages but in every home," he said.

Announcing that the Indian government will pay for the free power scheme, the prime minister said: "We have decided the burden for this will not be borne by the poor. The government will now go to their homes to give them electricity."

The Indian government has vowed to provide electricity to all homes in the country by December 2018.
