Aussie market higher in morning trade

SYDNEY, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Australian market opened higher on Monday, with most sectors seeing moderate gains.

At 11:06 (AEST), the benchmark S&P ASX/200 index was up 23.60 points or 0.42 percent at 5,706.10, while the broader All Ordinaries index added 21.40 points or 0.37 percent at 5,762.00.

"It looks like a pretty modestly positive day in the market," CMC Markets chief market strategist Michael McCarthy told Xinhua on Monday.

"A nice little gain in the opening gets us away from that floor level that threatened last week and given that we have a fairly event free week, it looks like steady as she goes."

At the moment, the energy sector that is the strongest performer, followed closely by financials.

The Commonwealth Bank (up 0.33 percent), Westpac Bank (up 0.70 percent), National Australian Bank (up 0.32 percent) and ANZ (up 0.57 percent).

BHP (up 0.35 percent), Rio Tinto (up 0.70 percent), Fortescue Metals (down 0.68 percent) and Newcrest (down 0.60 percent).

Woodside Petroleum (up 0.48 percent), Santos (up 0.63 percent) and Oil Search (up 1.02 percent)

Wesfarmers (down 0.29 percent) and Woolworths (down 0.43 percent).

Telstra (up 0.14 percent), CSL (up 0.47 percent) and Qantas (up 0.69 percent).
