BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- British Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, and Princess Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, will be representing Queen Elizabeth II at the Golden Jubilee Celebration of Brunei Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah's Accession to the Throne, the British High Commission to Brunei announced.

According to a press release obtained by Xinhua on Thursday, the Earl and Countess of Wessex are delighted to be representing the Queen at such a momentous occasion and one of such importance to the Sultan and the people of Brunei.

Prince Edward and Princess Sophie last visited Brunei in October 2000.

The longstanding and special relationship between the two royal families, especially between the Sultan and the Queen is what makes the UK-Brunei relationship so unique, the press release said.

The year 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of Brunei's Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah's accession to the throne. The country is preparing a series of grand celebrations for the Golden Jubilee in October.
