NEW DELHI, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Indian tax authorities Thursday raided the country's largest coffee chain on charges of tax evasion.

Sleuths from the Income Tax department conducted raids at 20 properties in southern Indian cities of Bengaluru and Chennai, and financial capital Mumbai belonging to V.G. Sidhartha who runs popular Cafe Coffee Day, chain of cafes across the country.

"Raids are going on and officials are searching for evidences of tax evasion," Income Tax department's Joint Commissioner S. Ramesh told the media.

"When it comes to tax evasion, authorities will spare none ... This is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's crackdown on black money and tax evaders that started since demonetization in November last year," said another Income Tax official.
