HONG KONG, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- The information authorities of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) on Wednesday reminded the public to keep a watchful eye on cyber security, especially on Internet-connected smart home devices.

Proper protection of Internet-connected devices poses a challenge to cyber security and Hong Kong should promote cyber security awareness across the community through various activities, said Victor Lam, deputy government chief information officer (infrastructure and operations) of the Hong Kong SAR, at a seminar.

Protection measures include changing system default passwords, keeping systems and software up-to-date, employing sophisticated encryption technology for wireless network communication and ensuring the removal of all personal data on devices before disposal, Lam said.

The seminar was organized by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, the Hong Kong Police Force and the Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center.

Police, experts and representatives from the information security industry briefed the audience on threats to Internet-connected devices.
