NEW DELHI, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- At least five people were killed and two others injured in landslides in the northeastern Indian state of Sikkim Wednesday, police said.

The landslides took place Wednesday morning at Namchi in southern Sikkim and were triggered by heavy rains that have been lashing the state for the past 24 hours.

"Five persons of a family were buried alive when their house collapsed in a landslide at Upper Gurpisey. Three bodies were pulled out of the debris later," a senior police official said.

Two other family members have been admitted to a government hospital with serious injuries, he said, adding that the condition of one is critical.

A mother-daughter duo were also killed when their house collapsed in another landslide that took place at Kateng Namphok Gpu.

"Their bodies have been recovered," the official said.

All roads in the area have been closed and traffic movement disrupted as a result, he added.

"Disaster management officials have rushed to the spot to assess the situation and to look for any more people trapped in the landslides," the official added.
