NEW DELHI, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- At least four people have been killed and more than 40 others injured in a road accident in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said Wednesday.

"The accident occurred late Tuesday night when a truck collided with a tractor trolley in the state's Budhanpur area," a senior police official said.

While four people were killed on the spot in the impact of the collision, those injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital by local people, he said.

"Most of the victims were travelling in the tractor trolley. The driver of the truck was also injured in the accident," the official said.

Eye-witnesses told cops that both the truck and the tractor were travelling at high speed and drivers of the vehicles lost control, leading to the fatal collision.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official said.

India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents often occur due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
