RABAT, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Global Hope Coalition has awarded the Special Recognition Award for Leadership to Morocco's King Mohammed VI for promoting tolerance, cross-cultural harmony, the official MAP news agency reported Tuesday.

The award was handed over by Irina Bokova, director-general of UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the Leadership Council of the Global Hope Coalition, to the king's brother Prince Moulay Rachid during a ceremony held Monday in New York, the report said.

It was awarded to commend King Mohammed VI for his "visionary leadership" in promoting tolerance and harmony between different cultures both in Morocco and on the international scene."

Speaking on the ceremony, Bokova underlined that the king's approach to promoting the values of tolerance "is a response to extremism and radical ideas by consolidating the values of mutual respect and openness."

The Global Hope Coalition is a newly-established international initiative dedicated to providing a global platform to bolster the civil society campaign to fight violent extremism and intolerance, preserve cultural heritage, and promote intercultural dialogue.

It brings together public leaders, private sector and civil society advocates in the fight against intolerance and violent extremism. Enditem
