Hong Kong Customs seizes suspected cannabis buds, ecstasy tablets

HONG KONG, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong Customs said on Tuesday that it had seized about 10 kilograms of suspected cannabis buds and about 5,000 tablets of suspected ecstasy in two recent inspections at Hong Kong International Airport.

Customs officers inspected an air mail parcel from Canada on Sept. 14 and seized about 10 kilograms of suspected cannabis buds inside a metal filter.

Two suspects related to the case, aged 37 and 41, were arrested Tuesday in the Yau Ma Tei area in the south of the Kowloon Peninsula.

In another inspection on Sept. 16, Customs officers seized about 5,000 tablets of suspected ecstasy from nine plastic bottles in an express parcel from Thailand.

A 38-year-old woman suspectedly related to the case was arrested Monday in Tai Kok Tsui, an area also in Kowloon.

Investigation of the above two cases is ongoing, said the Customs and Excise Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government.

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance of the HKSAR, trafficking a dangerous drug is a serious offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of 5 million Hong Kong dollars and life imprisonment.
