14 Tanzanian nationals die in road accident in central Uganda

KAMPALA, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- At least 14 Tanzanian nationals were killed and 17 others injured in a Sunday road accident in the central Uganda district of Mpigi, a police spokesperson said here late on Monday.

Polly Namaye, Uganda's deputy police spokesperson, told Xinhua by telephone that the tragic accident occurred after a Kampala bound lorry rammed onto a Coaster bus carrying Tanzanian nationals at Katonga in Mpigi along the Kampala-Masaka highway.

The Tanzanian citizens were returning back to their country after attending a Saturday wedding ceremony in the capital, Kampala.

"The driver of the lorry lost control following a tyre burst. It collided with the coaster killing about 14 people on spot and dozens injured," said Namaye.

Local media have put the death toll to 16.

Namaye said the injured were evacuated to Nsambya Hospital, a Kampala suburb for emergency treatment and further management

The remains of deceased were taken to Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala for postmortem.

Uganda registers at least 20,000 accidents with over 2,000 deaths each year, making it one of the countries with the highest road accident fatality rates in the world, according to police figures.
