RIO DE JANEIRO, Sep. 19 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's new Prosecutor-General Raquel Dodge took office on Monday with the legacy of taking over a legal process against President Michel Temer who appointed her.

Dodge, the first woman to have ever been appointed Brazil's prosecutor-general, succeeded Rodrigo Janot, who, on his last day in office last Friday, presented charges of obstructing justice and criminal associations against President Michel Temer.

Under Brazilian law, the House of Representatives will analyze the charges to decide whether to admit them. If the charges are admitted, the president will be immediately suspended awaiting trial. Otherwise the charges will be shelved until the end of the presidential term.

Dodge will now have to deal with the charges and may eventually handle the president's trial. In her inauguration speech, Dodge said the Prosecution Office has "the duty to demand that those who deal with public expenses do so in an honest and efficient manner."

"The Prosecution Office has the duty to promote justice and democracy, watch for the common god and the environment, give voice to those who do not have it and ensure that no one is above or below the law," she said.
