MADRID, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Spanish Civil Guards seized a total of 1.3 million posters promoting the October 1 independence referendum campaign in an operation on Sunday evening, the Spanish Interior Ministry confirmed on Monday.

The operation took place in the town of Moncada I Reixac, just two weeks before the referendum, which has been declared illegal by the Spanish Constitutional Court, which also ruled that any propaganda or acts to support the campaign are also against the law.

The seizures mean that in three days Spanish Civil Guards have now seized a total of 1.5 million posters, including 100,000 from a printers in the Poble Nou district of Barcelona on Friday, as well as the printers blocks used to make the posters.

The posters seized on Sunday belonged to the left wing pro-independence party CUP as well as the Catalan regional assembly (Generalitat).

The Interior Ministry explained that "material belonging to the 'Generalitat' promoting the illegal referendum, along with effects directly calling for a 'yes' vote" had been seized, "showing the convergence of efforts and the unity of action between both dynamics".

The Catalan Public Prosecutor last week insisted that Spanish national police and the Catalan regional police force were obliged to intervene in order to stop the referendum from taking place.

Meanwhile, the Catalan regional assembly has reacted to the closure of the official referendum website by activating an account on the social media site Twitter. This will now be the official channel for the referendum, along with a website with a European Union domain.

"It is impossible for them to put doors on a field," commented Catalan regional leader Carles Puigdemont in a tweet.
